I Became A Widow At 39 Years Old

I've been alone for awhile now, so I thought I'd share some tips and tricks to make it through the day and even, maybe quite possibly enjoy the day or the season.

Start New Holiday Traditions Just For You

The cool part of this is no compromising. If you like soup and sandwiches for Thanksgiving, that's what you have. If you only want to see a movie on July 4th, that's what you do. Honestly, I freaking love it.

  • Treat yourself to an extra nice meal
  • Binge your favorite thing
  • Make yourself an extra yummy breakfast the night before, pop it in the oven and have a lazy morning
  • Take walks
  • Visit a different place (this really helps get your mind off of things)

Volunteer Your Time

Over 75.7 million or 28.3% of the U.S. population age 16 and up formally volunteered through an organization between September 2022 and September 2023--Census.gov

It takes awhile to be comfortable all alone.  Especially on the holidays. That makes for a great opportunity to volunteer your time and surround yourself with others.  You get double the dopamine because not only are you getting human interaction, you're making a difference.

Clean and Organize Your Home

Less clutter means less anxiety for MOST people. This is one thing that really brings me peace.

Want to double down on the hominess feeling? Throw something in the crockpot to cook all day. Now, not only is the house clean but supper is handled, and the house smells dreamy.

Acknowledge Your Feelings

If you don't acknowledge your feelings, they'll only get worse.  Allow yourself the time to grieve your situation, then get on with it.  I do this all the time.  It takes practice and you have to be strict with yourself when it's time to put the grieving aside and celebrate.

Being Alone Is GREAT

One in nine people (11%) say they’ll be spending Christmas Day alone this year – up from one in 20 (5%) who said the same 55 years ago, according to new research that compares festive attitudes and behaviours in 2024 to those in 1969--Kings College London

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE that I know that has learned to be alone loves it. There is a certain learning curve, but trust me. Being alone will ruin you for other people. 😉😉

Reach Out To Friends And Family

It's really ok to call a friend or family member on a holiday or if you're feeling down. If you don't have anyone like that, talk to a clerk or go hang out somewhere you can people watch.
