Montana Is Top 3 In Dinosaur Fossil Discovery
If you are like me, you were always pumped with the fact dinosaur fossils were discovered in out home state of Montana.
Sure, they were dug up in other places for sure, but there was always a chance that you, yourself could end up finding one in your own backyard.
What's the likelihood of a person finding some sort of dinosaur fossils in Montana? It's actually pretty good odds.
According to Stacker, Montana is in the top 3 states in the United States with the most dinosaur fossils. I hope you're as stoked as I am over this fact.
Sacker gives the stats:
-Total fossils recorded in PBDB: 940
-Genus with the most fossils: Hadrosauridae (74 fossils)
-Time period with the most fossils: Maastrichtian (432 fossils)
In case you were wondering what PBDB is, it's The Paleobiology Database. According to their website, They are a non-governmental, non-profit public resource for paleontological data full scientists helping with research on a global level.
The only other states that have more are Wyoming at number 2 and California at number 1.
According to Stacker, several milestones in dinosaur fossils have occurred within our state.
The first dinosaur bone discovered in North America was found in Montana in 1854 near Judith Landing. Paleontologist Barnum Brown uncovered the first T. Rex bone in 1902 near Hell Creek, and Leonardo, a Brachylophosaurus found near Malta, is the world’s best-preserved dinosaur, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
In my eyes, we are the actual winners here, California can stuff it because WE have the first T. Rex discovery.
