I woke up this morning and my house was pretty cold. I like to keep the place pretty cool, but this was ridiculous.  The furnace worked fine this weekend, so here we go.

Luckily, I have one of those fake fireplaces with a heater, so I turned that on and went on to check things with the furnace.

What To Check When Your Furnace Stops Working

This is the third year in a row with this furnace having an issue, so I know just what to do.

• The filter was replaced last month
• The circuit breaker wasn't tripped
• The furnace was on

Time to get a hold of my landlord.

Getting Your Furnace Ready For Winter

While I was waiting, I thought I'd find out what else can be done to make sure your furnace works during the first cold snap.

• Check the furnace in the fall before it gets really cold
• Check your thermostat and install a new one, if needed
• Hire someone to do an inspection

I think since the furnace was running okay this weekend, it's just one of those things. Sometimes you can do everything right, and things still break down.

What About A Furnace Tune-Up?

It's easy to get a furnace tune-up so that you don't end up like me next year. What the internet seems to really warn about with these tune-ups is to make sure you go through a reputable business. It looks like sometimes the furnace is looked at and nothing else happens. Then your furnace ends up breaking down anyway.
