Keeping things fun but should be a priority for all trick or treaters, especially for younger children and even for our pets.  Simple safety checks before heading out for the evening will not just keep everyone safe but probably give you some piece of mind also.

How to Keep Trick or Treat Safe and Fun in Montana

We all know the basics when it comes to dressing up for the holiday:

  • Don't have things dragging which could cause a fall
  • Don't wear all black, use glow sticks to be seen better
  • Take a flashlight and keep to well-lit areas

Those basics are important, but other tips can help your evening be a great one without compromising the fun factor for any age:

  • Cross at corners, not mid-street
  • If the porch light is off, skip that home, they probably ran out of candy!
  • Try costumes on early before leaving home to ensure a good fit and mobility
  • No high heels, flip flops or over-size shoes, nobody likes a broken ankle

Even More Tips to Keep Halloween Safe this Year in Montana

Other tips that can help keep your mind a little less stressed this year that you might not consider, but are still important to be mindful of:

  • Jack-O-Lanterns should use LED candles, not wick/fire based
  • Don't go inside a stranger's home, regardless of how big the candy bar is
  • Don't accept rides from strangers.  Not everyone in a mask is friendly
  • Dogs don't understand costumes; it may be best to keep them away from the door
  • Do a quality check of the loot, anything suspicious looking?
  • Remind teens that there is a fine line from being scary and permanent trauma
