Through the Montana National Guard (MAG) Public Affairs Office, a brief statement has been issued on the recent tragic death of a cadet at the Montana Youth Challenge Academy (MYCA).

The Academy, located in Dillon, Montana, is "a structured tuition free leadership academy where students work towards their high school diploma, build professional skills" and more.

Montana Youth Academy in Mourning After Death of Cadet

In the statement through social media, the press release stated that the incident happened on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at the facility in Dillon.  Details about the exact circumstances surrounding the cadet's death have not been released as of press time.

In the statement, the MAG said the cadet was an enrolled student at the MYCA, and the "investigation is ongoing and no further details can be released at this time."  The director for the facility, Melissa Robbins said "Right now, we are focused on caring for the cadets, staff and families in every way possible."

Academy is Preparing for Cadet Graduation Later This Month in Montana

The death has a cast a shadow of what should be a joyous time for the cadets and the MYCA.  Graduation for the current class of 55 students is set for June 20, 2026.  No announcement regarding the ceremony has been made by the academy or MAG.

In the statement, Brig. Gen. Trent Gibson, Adjutant General of Montana said "This is a close community bound together by the shared commitment to helping young people.  This loss is felt throughout the community and across the National Guard family."
