I have stated many times over in articles that technology is both wonderous and burden, all wrapped in pretty bow for us to devour endlessly.  In this case it would be the latter of the two, in regard to repairing those cool, techy things we've bought.

Especially if you have bought them over the last decade or so.  Being able to fix something with your own two hands has become more and more obsolete.  And a great example of that is an incredibly simple one.  The battery in your cell phone.

Could Montana Lead the Way After Recent Right to Repair Ruling?

In early April 2026, a "right to repair" ruling brought a little relief to farmers and ranchers across not just Montana, but the entire U.S. in granting the ability to repair equipment purchased from the John Deere company.  The ruling, in my opinion, was needed.  And it could pave the road for other right to repair laws.

Now granted, the last time I drove a tractor was when International Harvester and Ford were still making them.  But in those times, I watched my father tear apart, rebuild and manufacture his own parts hundreds, if not thousands of times on the ranch.  I can't even imagine his fury with a tractor controlled via computer that he wouldn't be allowed to repair.

From Montana to the European Union - How They Tie Together

It isn't just about tractors though.  A recent article through TechRadar says that the European Union will require phone makers to design devices with batteries that are easier for users to replace in 2027.  Perhaps Montana could lead the way on this side of the pond with other "right to repair" areas, not just implements.

Even now, certain car makers have severely limited the ability to access your car's electronic control unit, or ECU.  Even more so on certain models of sports cars.  What about appliances that you want to repair, but would need software for?  It could even be a boom for local repair shops that would now be allowed to repair items they weren't able to in the past.  And my father would still be able to tinker in the garage without me hearing him across the shop yelling.
