Montana is Home to A Wide Variety of Treasures Across the State
Montana is home to many grand and magnificent things. National and state parks. Our state is filled with amazing animals, scenery, waterways and mountains. So, one doesn't need to look very far to see why we are the "Treasure State".
But when you think that moniker, you probably think more of real treasure. A pirate's plunder of gold. And you would be right. Montana is also home to treasures like copper, agate, sapphires and the big one, gold.
Montana Mining History Gets Going in the 1800's and Continues Today
With the first strike of gold in 1858 near Drummond, Montana and another large strike near the same area in 1862, the Gold Rush in the state was underway. Two years later, in 1864 the Last Chance Gulch strike would be the last major gold find, but our status as a place to find gold was established.

Gold mining would soon be replaced in the 1890's though, with the discovery of copper and silver near Butte, Montana. The area would soon become known as the "Richest Hill on Earth".
Montana Recently Named in Top Ten Places to Find Gold in US
Even though large gold strikes, for now, are a thing of the past, it doesn't mean that Montana isn't still rich in gold. In fact, you can still find that shiny metal lurking in many areas of the state.
