There's nothing better during the summer months than a lush green lawn.

You know what I mean; the kind of grass that keeps your neighbors, envious!

In order to keep that lawn looking great this summer, it all starts this spring!

Spring Lawn Fertilization in Montana

If you're anything like me, you're already itching to get out in the yard and start working.

But be careful, applying lawn fertilizer too early in the season can be harmful.

This can lead to excessive foliage growth and not allow for strong root development.

According to the experts and this article from Montana State University, you should apply your first fertilizer treatment after mowing your lawn a few times.

This will allow for those roots to grow deep before the top growth kicks off.

Fertilizer Proper Application Rate

Just like fertilizing too early, over fertilizing is also not good for your lawn.

On average, you should aim for about 3 pounds of nitrogen per thousand square foot of lawn and split it up into three fertilizer sessions.

Also, remember that most cool-season grass goes dormant during the summer, so hold off on that second application until after Labor Day.

Apply the third application around Columbus Day to make sure those nutrients are stored in the roots for future use in early spring.
