How AI Data Centers Can Actually Be Good For Montana
The talk of AI data centers in Montana is certainly a hot button topic and one that has everyone on the edge of their seats.
Where will get built? Will they deplete our resources?
They're all valid questions but what if I told you there's a big benefit a lot of people are overlooking when it comes to AI data centers?
Is There Anything Good About AI Data Centers?
By now, many of us have heard about all of the cons about having a data center in the community. Whether it the noise pollution or the concerns about water consumption, they are all valid concerns.
But what about the potential tax revenue generated from these data centers that would go right back into the communities they're operating in?
In Loudoun County in Virginia, it was reported by the Consumer Energy Alliance that the county reported that "for every $1 spent on public infrastructure/services for data centers, the county receives $26 in return."

That surplus reportedly resulted in $111.8 million, specifically for the local public schools, and get this - this also allowed the county to lower residential property tax rates.
In Grant County, Washington, "property tax revenues climbed 1,277% to $54 million." The town of Quincy spent their portion of the money to build a new school, hospital, and fire station, "while reducing its levy rate by 70%" according to Consumer Energy Alliance.
Is The Revenue Made from AI Data Centers Worth It?
Therein lies the question, right? I'll say this - when it comes to our natural resources, land, etc. There is nothing that can replace that and no amount of money should come before that.
With that said, there are a lot of financial benefits that we just talked about.
So, what do YOU think? Could Montana counties benefit from this potential revenue despite the risks? I want to do a follow-up on this story and share your responses.
