Recently I wrote an article about all of the state symbols for Montana. It was a little quiz to see how well you knew Montana.

One of the questions was what is the state bird, which is the Western Meadowlark.

It got me thinking just how common is the Western Meadowlark in Montana?

It's obviously a bird you'd see quite a bit of as we wouldn't make it our official state bird if wasn't observable in the state.

It might surprise you then to find out that it's only the 15th most common bird you'll see in your Montana backyard.

The big reason for that, they don't come to feeders as they mostly eat grains and insects.

What are the most common birds in Montana?

Without Googling the answer you might say a crow is the most common bird in Montana backyards, but they don't even rank in the top 10 coming in at number 13.

So what's the #3 most common bird you'll see in Montana?

Black-capped Chickadee

These little birds will show up in your backyard about 32% of the time. If you'd like attract the Black-capped Chickadee then get some black oil sunflower seeds or suet for your backyard.

That brings us to the second most common bird in Montana backyards.

Most people consider these birds pests, so they try to not set out anything to attract them. None the less they'll show up in your backyard 37% of the time making them the second most common bird in your backyard.

As far as the #1 most common bird, I doubt the answer will come as a shock.

You'll have a 39% of seeing this bird when you look out your window here in Montana.
